Annie Hallinan visited the Letham Primary School in May 2017. She was warmly welcomed by teacher Judith Delargy and her students, who range from first to third grades. They read "Petrith Pin" together while enjoying their morning snack, and then discussed some of the issues of "being different." The students truly seemed to understand the issue and it led to a lively bit of conversation.
The biggest surprise was the penguin character featured in the book, on the very last page. It turns out that they had just been studying real-life penguins, so when they found one in the book they were thrilled and fascinated.
After Ms. Hallinan left, Ms. Delargy had the class write a nice thank you note. She wrote:
“First of all, thank you so much for the brilliant book. The kids loved it and were so excited to see the penguin. The penguin has been named “Fluffy” and is a permanent member of the class, sitting on chairs and listening to our learning. The children wanted to say “thank you” so they have made a book full of penguins and named them for you…. Thank you for being so kind, [signed] Judith Delargy and all the P1-3’s”
Ms. Delargy included with the note their drawings of the penguin. We include those handsome illustrations here. along with the original Fluffy, from the book. These young artists will make you smile!
